When you become aware of your traumas and bring them into your consciousness in therapy, you are engaging in integration and processing. This is a key part of trauma healing and can involve several psychological processes:
Increased Self-Awareness – You are acknowledging past experiences that may have been suppressed or minimized.
Emotional Processing – You begin to understand and feel the emotions connected to those traumas, which is crucial for healing.
Cognitive Reframing – You start to challenge negative beliefs or survival patterns formed due to trauma.
Neural Rewiring – Your brain is working to process and integrate these experiences in a way that allows for healing, rather than continuing to be stuck in survival responses.
Empowerment & Choice – By bringing trauma into consciousness, you gain the power to respond differently rather than being controlled by unconscious triggers.
From an occupational therapy perspective, this awareness can help you reshape daily routines, coping strategies, and interactions to support healing and self-regulation.
